ALBUM REVIEW: Lynne Jackaman – One Shot

Release Date: August 14th 2020

Lynne Jackaman - One Shot

British rock & blues singer/songwriter Lynne Jackaman has released her debut solo album ‘One Shot’ on August 14 through JackamanMusic and it has been making waves in both the US & UK, with her incredible collection of Soul and R&B.  If you are unfamiliar with Jackaman then her previous work is something that needs to be checked out, recording with bands like The Quireboys, Thunder & Cormac Neeson and his band The Answer.  Factor into that the wonderful Saint Jude, who’s debut album ‘Diary of a Soul Fiend’ showcased the incredible range of her vocal & songwriting talents and you can see that Jackaman’s versatility has been the key to her career so far.

‘One Shot’ is a slightly different direction once more, as Lynne turns her attention to her more soulful roots and this is made even more authentic by the fact that the album was recorded in the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals.  With co-writes from Quireboys guitarist Guy Griffin and supported by an collection of incredible musicians such as Spooner Oldham whose organ playing helped bring ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’ and ‘Mustang Sally’ to life; Marvin and Aretha’s keyboardist Clayton Ivey; Ray Charles’ bassist Bob Wray; Bonnie Raitt’s guitarist Will McFarlane; and The Shoals Sisters, backing vocalists for everyone from Etta James to Alicia Keys, ‘One Shot’ is a powerful, playful & emotive body of work that just gets better with each & every listen.

Tracks such as ‘Supernasty’, ‘Red House’ and ‘Copy Cat’ have the ability to brighten even the dullest of days and will have you strutting & dancing to the fridge as you go to top up your wine glass – listen out for the note she holds on ‘Copy Cat’ as it is just spellbinding.  Many of the songs are filled with orchestrated horns & stunning harmonies which add to the depth & quality throughout.  The bluesy ‘On Your Own Now’ is wonderful and slower tracks like the piano-led ‘On My Own Stage’ and ‘Beautiful Loss’, written as a farewell to former Saint Jude bandmate & close friend Adam Green, just take your breath away.

‘One Shot’ is an incredible collection of songs from a woman who has fought adversity to release this album, with the doomed Pledge Music campaign delaying its initial recording, even after her fans helped reach her required monetary target in just three weeks of setting it up.  A stunning debut, ‘One Shot’ was produced by Jamie Evans and mixed/mastered by Wayne Proctor.

9/10
