ALBUM REVIEW: Rebel Machine – Whatever It Takes

Big Balls Productions - August 9th 2019

3 years after their debut ‘Nothing Happens Overnight’ Brazilian rockers Rebel Machine is back with a second long-player ‘Whatever It Takes’ on the Swedish label Big Balls Productions.  And this time they’ve expanded their range of styles and sounds, but retained that hard rocking edge.

What you get is 12 songs high on energy and passion and touching on a range of subjects from personal issues, resistance, standing up for minorities and fighting for human rights. Not your average rock and roll lyrical material, granted but it all sounds and fits rather fine in these hands.

Opening with hard rocker ‘Underdogs’ things get off to a great start before the pace picks up even more for ‘Square One’ and then we get kinda sleazy for ‘In My Heart’ – it’s a great start to the record before the radio-friendly ‘Dancing Alone’ shows another side to the band.  It’s a change you’ll either love or hate before we rock harder again for ‘Full Throttle’.

Best of the rest just might be the excellent ‘Fall Into Temptation’ or the mid-tempo sing along ‘Dead Man Walking’ and whilst there are some misses on here like the closing ballad ‘Fences’ there are far more hits. Great stuff if you love bands like Supersuckers, Hellacopters, Turbonegro, Gluecifer and Imperial State Electric.
