Alter Bridge have released a new lyric video for the track “Metalingus,” the megahit from their 2004 debut and fan favorite album, One Day Remains, which premiered yesterday on WWE wrestler and Hall of Famer -“The Rated R Superstar” Edge’s social pages courtesy of Craft Recordings.
The new lyric video was created by the animation team Gentlemen Visuals, who have worked with Santana, Ravi Shankar, Elvis Costello, Ghostpoet, and Timothy B. Schmit, among others. The video comes after the band had to recently postpone their three-week 2020 headlining tour featuring Black Stone Cherry and Saint Asonia due to Covid-19.
Although never released as a single, “Metalingus” is one of Alter Bridge’s most popular songs and is a live staple. The song is used by current WWE wrestler and Hall of Famer “The Rated R Superstar” Edge as his entrance theme since 2004.
Regarding the meaning of the song, Guitarist Mark Tremonti shares with MusicOHM (2005), “‘Metalingus’ is a song about somebody who finally sees clearly. It’s just like us – this [Alter Bridge] is clearly what we should be doing. This is the right path for us.”
Mark explains how the song got its name to Louder Sound (2017): “We had a dry erase board on the wall where we had categories of songs in different stages of development. When the song was done I went to the board and as it had no title, for a filler I just wrote ‘Metalingus’ off the top of my head to be funny. The record label owner came to hear us play and when he asked what the name of the song we just played was, we told him and explained it was just a filler title. He said, ‘No, you’ve got to name that song ‘Metalingus’, it’s a great name!’ So we did. Honestly, I just came up with it off the top of my head.”
Regarding the song’s WWE connection, Edge shares (2013): “When I was out with my neck injury, I met Mark Tremonti. I met him at a Metallica show, actually. And I went back to his place after and he played me what would end up being the first Alter Bridge album. I heard ‘Metalingus’ and I was like, ‘Dude, can I use that when I come back?’ And he said, ‘Yeah! Of course!” So that ended up being the genesis of it and when I heard it, it was actually Mark singing. It hadn’t been Myles yet. So it was in its infancy, but I had heard that song. I was like, ‘Okay, that’s gonna be what I come to the ring to.’ And that’s how that all started.”
