EP REVIEW: Molly Karloff – Superannuation

First impressions sometimes re unwittingly spot on and when I first heard the title track and opening song from Molly Karloff’s ‘Superannuation’ EP I thought – that sounds just like Justin Hawkins of The Darkness fronting Australian 00’s rockers ‘Jet’.

‘She Said’ is almost a riff on that, more laid back, smooth in its groove with a great solo and hypnotic refrain and some nice heavy guitars to punctuate. These guys definitely have something.

And that something also manages to rear its head on the disc’s final three: ‘Do You Wanna’ starts of Zepplinny before falling back on a frenetic Strokes-like verse and chorus set up. And we’re talking the spikiness of that Strokes debut not the later stuff.

‘Do It Again’ is another up-tempo clanky rocker that hits the spot; and we end with the glorious slice of garage rock that is ‘The Other Side’. It could be the best here.

Sure we hear this kinda stuff rise its head all the time and every now again you get a band that really captures the moment and the masses like The Strokes did, like Jet did. These guys might just be best of all.

EP of the year in January? Unheard of!
