LIVE REVIEW: Rock n Metal Revival – Perth, August 1st 2020

The Boston, Perth - August 1st 2020

Rock N Metal Revival

Coming out of lockdown restrictions has seen a bunch of live gigs pop up as the city of Perth looks to once again embrace live music. One such event this past weekend was the next installment of Rock n Metal Revival which before the pandemic hit, were looking to bring a sense of nostalgia and fun back into rock n’ roll with tributes to some of rocks greats. Covers can be a hit and miss sometimes but this was definitely one of the better ones to catch.

Capacity limits meant crowd attendance was sparse but a sold out event with punters missing out still clamouring to get tickets at the last minute showed a big interest in this show and it was easy to see why after having witnessed a fantastic performance by all 3 acts that were diverse within the classic rock world.

Kicking the night off was She Rocks who focused on female fronted acts with Mell B Coz from Shaved and Dangerous: A Salute to the Baby Animals leading the way. The always enchanting “Black Velvet” from Allanah Myles made it’s way at the top of the setlist followed by hit tracks from The Cranberries, Pat Benitar, Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morrissette and a nice twist on Cindi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”. It was a solid start to the night already.

A bit of 80’s glam hit the stage next with Hostage taking on a set of Poison classics. The fun factor was stepped up as the band took the crowd, which was filling up nicely by this time, back to a time when things didn’t appear to be so serious, at least on the music front. It’s certainly a good escape from everything that is going on in the world right now and the punters embraced it, singing along to hit songs like “Look What The Cat Dragged In” and the catchy anthemic “I Want Action”. The band sounded great and looked the part, complete with 80’s dress standards and wigs to boot.

“Unskinny Bop” got things moving on the floor while “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” got the phone lightes out and “Talk Dirty To Me” capped off what was a fun filled performance.

Ending the night was probably the best act of the night, Eruption. Taking on a slightly heavier approach in a more traditional classic rock vein, these guys absolutely nailed it with every take on the songs they covered. From Ozzy Osbourne’s “No More Tears” to Skid Row’s “Youth Gone Wild” as well further classics from Alice Cooper, Kiss and an absolutely brilliant cover of Nazareth’s “Hair Of The Dog”. Sound wise I don’t think I had ever seen The Boston venue sound so good, crystal clear with a real punch to the gut which just elevated the entire performance.

The band also took on Twisted Sister’s iconic “We’re Not Gonna Take It” which just seemed so fitting given the times we are currently live in and so the song really made that little extra impact for some real relevance. These guys are hitting the next installment of Hornography on August 29th, so do yourselves a favor and go see them, well worth your time!
