Perth Pop/Punk project Alex Andra tackles mental health in debut single

Perth’s Paige Savill has garnered attention in new-wave Synth-Pop band I Call Val with two WAM Award nominations and performances alongside the likes of Tonight Alive, The Faim and Theory of a Deadman; as well as personal accolades including selection in WA’s first APRA AMCOS female singer/songwriter mentorship program in 2018, and involvement as mentor through the Girls Rock!WA camps. Armed with her passion to creatively push boundaries and use her art as a platform to create a better world, Savill is now embarking on her first solo voyage with new Pop/Punk project Alex Andra.

Alex Andra captures vulnerable emotion with effervescent spirit, filling lonely silence with catchy hooks and powerful melodies. Drawing influence from inspirations such as Stand Atlantic, Paramore and Yours Truly, Alex Andra delivers high-energy, anthemic Pop/Punk with her debut single ‘Not The Beginning’ – out now through Doomity Records.

‘Not The Beginning’ grapples with the ideas of personal growth and maintaining relationships through these transitions, the track lending itself as a vehicle to drive home Alex Andra’s message of the intensity of mental health and how crucial a part music and art can play in gathering a community to continue the dialogue around such topics, and how cathartic that can be as an artist.

In Alex Andra’s words: “As an emerging artist I want emphasis to be put on how this music is not only giving myself and others an ability to share and work through some personally deep things, but is also enabling communities to gather together in solidarity. The energies that Pop/Punk music provides are powerful. They bring with them a sense of strength, intertwined with content that, albeit dark at times, vulnerably outreaches and cradles the loneliness we didn’t know we shared.”

The lyrical content tackles Alex Andra’s expression of her personal experience working to “acknowledge how the turmoil in past relationships was greatly my responsibility” with the metaphor of dirt referring to Savil’s therapy and transferral of blame in the lyrics “Clawed through dirt, only found blood under these nails was always mine;” while “I am shapeshifting, meet me here once more. You want the old me? I’ll pass” encompasses the message of moving on and moving forward.

Savill explains “I’ve been through some of the most intense and transformative therapy over the past year, and this single serves as a recognition of that and a statement acknowledging I don’t want to go back.”

‘Not The Beginning’ was co-written and produced by Paige Savill (vocal melody and lyrics) and Jay Huxtable (music), with recording and mastering by Huxtable at Oracle Sound.

Alex Andra is the first official signing to Perth, WA’s Doomity Records – the independent music label founded by Mat Weaven a.k.a Tobias Wonderdog.  Doomity Records is focused on creating more opportunities and better mental health outcomes in the music industry, making the message of ‘Not The Beginning’ a fitting first release for the label.

‘Not The Beginning’ is released through Doomity Records and available now, with more to come from Alex Andra and Doomity Records in 2020 following this debut.
