It’s time to put on your red shoes and dance, as Perth Symphony Orchestra presents STARDUST: The Music of David Bowie. Now with a bigger venue to accommodate popular demand and comply with COVID-19 restrictions, plus a fresh announce of vocal and conductor talent hitting the stage on Thursday, September 17, this will be among Perth’s first genuine stadium concert experiences post-Corona when it hits HBF Stadium, Mount Claremont.
Innovative, as wildly acclaimed as he was popular, and quite simply one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, witness the moods, colour and androgyny of Bowie, that continue to impact popular culture even now.
Thanks to songs already voted on by fans earlier this year, you can expect to hear all the hits from Heroes, Changes, Ziggy Stardust, Space Oddity, Rebel Rebel, The Jean Genie, Suffragette City, Life on Mars? and Ashes to Ashes, all the way to Queen collaboration Under Pressure. The Man Who Sold the World has been as remarkable in death as he was in life. Who doesn’t recall how his passing lit up our social media feeds like nothing else before or since?
Once and for all it proved the Starman’s music was, is and will remain, a living, breathing thing unto itself: open to the sort of radical reinterpretation Perth Symphony has become renowned for in recent years with timeless artists such as Nirvana and The Doors.
Indeed, STARDUST: The Music of David Bowie offers the sort of innovation the Thin White Duke himself would be proud of. Having already garnered acclaim and standing ovations from delighted audiences in its rare appearances, it won’t surprise anyone to hear just how amazing Bowie’s songs sound with a majestic, ethereal orchestra behind them.
After all, Bowie always aimed for widescreen and celestial, and this production delivers just that. Sound, and Vision.
A vastly talented multi-instrumentalist in his own right, playing everything from guitar, keys, harmonica, thumb piano, drums and various percussion instruments, to alto and baritone saxophones, stylophone, viola, cello, koto and more, Perth Symphony Orchestra will expand to include many of these wild instruments on the night. For orchestra fans it promises something unique; for Bowie fans, this is a show not to be missed.
Joining PSO in the role of Bowie are the multi-dimensional talents and androgynous pairing of singers Addison Axe and Steve Hensby, who will represent the moves, moods and many sides of Bowie’s sexual charisma. Axe is originally a Londoner and veteran of wildly acclaimed WA bands Axe Girl and The Tommyhawks, while Hensby is a live entertainer par excellence, whether alongside his 8-piece Steve Hensby Band, or performing on Fringe World stages showcasing his theatrical side.
And in her Perth Symphony Orchestra debut, the incredible talents of conductor Elise Chong will leave audiences spellbound – an alumnus of PSO’s Women on the Podium program, Chong is set to be WA’s newest sensation in orchestral music.
