ALBUM REVIEW: Mason Hill – Against The Wall

7Hz Productions - 5th March 2021

Mason Hill is a band making big waves at the moment in the UK with their long awaited album ‘Against the Wall’ hitting the UK Top 20 and the Rock Chart number one. For a UK rock band to do that amidst the UK pandemic with scant retail, and no live dates is a feat of some decently over sided proportions. It’s been a long time in the making too with the Glasgow based band forming in 2013

If you’re a fan of huge riffs, soaring choruses and don’t mind a bit of Shinedown and Alter Bridge then you’ve come to the right place because between the slow build bookends ‘Reborn’ and ‘Reborn (Prologue)’ that open and close proceedings there’s a lot of impassioned arena-sized rock going on.

If we’re talking best foot forward then ‘No Regret’ is that foot, a song that garbs you from the off and mixes a little Black Stone Cherry in with the afore-mentioned influences. What immediately grabs you is the wonderful guitar sound, the impressive rhythm section and THAT voice. It’s that kind of sound that makes you feel like they could get away with a few fillers just on the back of the obvious talent at hand. There’s no chance of anything approaching filler here though!

Take the soaring modern rock ‘fists in the air’ master class of the title track, or the uber-catchy ‘Broken Son’ (one of my top picks), or maybe the more frenetic ‘DNA’ and you know that this is a serious album. Then add into the mix the wonderfully moving ballad ‘Who We Are’ and the bruising ‘Find My Way’ and you’re starting to think ‘classic’ would be rather fitting.

Then moments later when you hit the huge groove of ‘Hold On’ and hear the uplifting grooves of ‘We Pray’ you realise things just inexplicably upped another level! Closer ‘Where I Belong’ just underlines it all.

This is seriously impressive. May the road open soon to live music because this is a band you have to hear!

Mason Hill are Scott Taylor (Lead Vocals), James Bird (Lead Guitar), Marc Montgomery (Guitar), Matthew Ward (Bass) and Craig McFetridge (Drums)
