Fans of legendary Aussie band Boom Crash Opera are in for a treat as they announce the release of their first live single and EP.
‘Get Out Of The House Live’ is the initial taste of what’s to come from ‘Kick It Out… Live’, the 6-track EP dropping on February 18, 2022.
To mark the occasion, Peter Farnan has shared his musings on the band that’s been a part of his life for more than 30 years:
“I started Boom Crash Opera with Richard Pleasance in 1985. Here’s what randomly flashes through my mind: How lucky were we to find Dale Ryder. A full house at our first ever gig.
Our first single, ‘Great Wall’ takes off – every week for months we’re in the Australian top 5 on Countdown. Countdown! Countdown! So many times we got to know the camera people who did our close ups.
The final ever Countdown at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. We perform. We win an award. At the end Rich rushes Molly, takes off the hat and pops off a photo!
Recording in London with Alex Sadkin. Boy George, pursued by paparazzi, retreats to the studio next door, Robert Plant drops by to say hi. ‘Who’s that woman sitting quietly in the corner?’ (It was Ricki Lee Jones – I never knew – Maz plays darts with her).
Touring, touring, touring: the top end, all over; one rainy night in New Zealand I nearly fall off the roof of a giant outdoor stage on top of Iva Davies (he never knew).
Recording ‘These Here Are Crazy Times’: we know we’ve bagged some big songs.
More touring. Full houses now. U2 in the audience one night. We hang out. Now we’re off to the US to work with their producer, Jimmy Iovine. A house in the Hollywood Hills. ‘Who’s that guy sitting at the console on our session?’ (It was Jon Bon Jovi – I never knew). I’m enjoying my dinner in the lounge while Joe Cocker, Wendy and Lisa, Chrissie Hynde fly by. Is this actually happening?
More touring. Bigger houses again.
Dale and Michael Hutchence collude at the ARIA Awards (Dale was often compared to Hutch – both acknowledged they were different beasts)
Back to LA to record Fabulous Beast. Another house in the Hollywood Hills. The LA riots. An earthquake. Australian bands on a government junket play LA. Our house has the party. Billy Idol crashes our mix session and parties with our producer, who was also his producer (who is mixing this record?)
More touring. We now have a live set stacked with hits.
Album 4. A musical left turn. We embrace new tech. We do the first live triple cast (four band members in four different states playing live on national television).
Band members come and go. Partners and children. The core stays solid.
Members past and present reconvene to make an acoustic album in rural Victoria on the weekend of the Black Saturday fires. Dancing in the Storm indeed.
We can’t stop playing. We’re still playing. And now, over 30 year later we have a live release… and right now GET OUT OF THE HOUSE could not be more appropriate!”
