Pathways has released their new single, “Great Old Ones” to announce their return to the metal scene. The music video, shot by Karl at HotKarlProductions, gave the band a chance to elaborate on the H.P. Lovecraft themes in a Victorian mansion setting. The release is a chance to showcase the new line up consisting of Vocalist, Caner Gokeri and Bassist, Kyle Miller. Both members were added after the band’s relocation to Seattle, Wa. The band is excited to be back after a 5 year hiatus.
We have always had a strong classical influence. Our identity has been shaped from having neo-classical metalcore/deathcore elements, to just being strictly metal now. The older tunes were designed with an aggressive and chaotic foundation, while the current work is focused on groove and purposeful melodies, while of course, maintaining that classical ominous vibe. We couldn’t be happier with how the sound has been defined. It took a long time to reach this exact point of musical maturity, but the wait will be worth every moment passed (especially for the fans).
The concept behind Great Old Ones is one of scale. People get caught up in their own world to the point they forget they are a minuscule part of a universe so big they can’t wrap their head around it. Great Old Ones invokes Lovecraftian and Cosmic horror elements, which explore a certain nihilism about our small place in a vast universe, but also comfort in that. Though not mentioned directly by name, certain entities within the Lovecraft mythos are referenced as fun Easter eggs for fans of H.P. Lovecraft and his work. The music supports the theme, exposing grand elements while maintaining a beauty + horror/mystery balance. There are two solos in the song – guitar and bass. We wanted to have a build and lots of aggression in both the solo sections. Each solo starts off blazing, tames down, focuses on supporting the song mood, then ending with more aggressive, fast playing. Giving just enough time for the ending transition into the double chorus.
As this release is meant to showcase the newer music identity, brand, and pave the way for album promotion, we aim to go about this in a very bold and calculated way. We have learned so much about the industry (still learning) over the years, and have seen how much the pandemic & social climate is still affecting the future of it. We think it is definitely smart to be strategic with self-releasing music and distribution. Our catalog now includes 4 music videos, a full-length album, a single, and tons of photoshoots – all to be self-released for now, in order to make way for future branding. We have already begun writing another album as we speak and we will be more active than we have ever been previously.
