ALBUM REVIEW: When Rivers Meet – We Fly Free

One Road Records - 20th November 2020

When Rivers Meet the husband and wife Blues team have crafted an album here that really hints at more good things to come. Winning four UKBlues Awards in 2021 for ‘Emerging Blues Artist of the Year’; ‘Blues Band of the Year’; ‘Blues Album of the Year’; and ‘Most Inspirational Online Performance of the Year’ is some achievement even if we’re not sure who the UKBlues Federation are or how they chose their rather unfamiliar shortlists, but a win’s a win in my books.

If you want a record full of drama and passion and melody all underpinned by a rather gritty, and dare I say it rather ‘White Stripes’ take on the genre then this is it. Add a great female vocal and some cool riffs and you’ve got an album worthy of a few awards. Openers ‘Did I Break the Law’ and ‘Bound For Nowhere’ might be the most “Stripesy” here but that shouldn’t put you off as there are plenty of other textures to enjoy.  Take a listen to the male vocal on ‘Breaker of Chains’ the southern-Americana-tinged track is one of the best here and something different.

Elsewhere things remain solid and impressive with highlights including the Gospel-tinged ‘I’d Have Fallen’, the Zeplinny ‘We Fly Free’ and the wonderful single ‘Battleground’ – three tracks that show an impressive scope and unlimited potential! A name to look out for!
