Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram – ‘662’ Album Review

Alligator Music - 2021

The combination of Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram and producer Tom Hambridge worked wonderfully well last time around on the debut so why change want ain’t broke? They team up again on ‘662’ and whilst there’s still plenty of Blues guitar histrionics like on the debut here their is more depth and deviation making it arguably an even more interesting journey.

To start off with the shuffle of ‘662’ (The area code of his home town) and the strutting Blues of ‘She Calls me Kingfish’ in all honesty doesn’t stray too far from that wonderful debut neither does ‘Long Distance Woman’ a wonderful riff rocker with a dash of flash and dab of Hendrix.

There’s Soul in the slower ‘Another Life Goes By’ which might just be my favourite, and the gentle ‘That’s All it Takes’ adds horns and jazz, but it’s the acoustic ‘You’re Already Gone’ that precedes them which gives them a run for their money.

But there’s so much more to enjoy here – from the stomping My Bad’ and the wonderful idea and execution of ‘Something In The Dirt’ which ponders musical terroir, to the wonderful tribute to Kingfish’s mum ‘Rock & Roll’ that closes proceedings as a bonus track.

After an incredible debut comes an incredible follow up. This kid has the magic.
