INTERVIEW: Tim Rogers & The Twin Set – Tines of Stars Unfurled – the Interview

Tim Rogers the You Am I front man began 23 years ago with an album that quickly become one of his most cherished, a ‘solo’ debut backed in truth by the roughshod country barstool confessional camaraderie of a band called The Twin Set. Fast forward to 2023 and the question remains: “What Rhymes With Cars and Girls?”

It can take the most skilled and seasoned song and dance man decades to work that out. Decades in which smirking strangers have often sidled up to him — “always when I’m ordering sandwiches,” Tim Rogers puzzles — to offer well-meaning suggestions like “Bars and curls, mate” or “Galahs in pearls”. Indeed it is that iconic first solo album that led to this year’s sequel if you will.

Tines of Stars Unfurled is that rarest of rock’n’roll phenomena, the sequel album. With Jen Anderson’s fiddle returning to a front line of faithful folk-rock footsoldiers, it’s an album of 11 songs penned as considered ripostes and rejoinders to each song on that first album.

Mark caught up with Tim to dig deeper and talk music and well, just shoot the breeze. It’s great to talk to a sure fire legend and find out they are just as intriguing as you’d hoped they would be.
