With Perth’s live music scene brimming with so many talented artists it’s sometimes difficult to pick which gig you want to catch. Tonight, I headed to the wonderful Mojo’s in North Fremantle for a bill that had me excited from the off. With a warm welcome as I entered I soon discovered that covid was rearing its ugly head once more and there was a change to the bill… The Floors were out and Old Blood were drafted in and it was a change that fitted perfectly and one that helped the buzzing venue, explode with powerful energy and positive vibes all night.
Old Blood are a band that have eluded me in the past, so tonight they were new blood for this reviewer, and mightily impressed I was too. Slide blues, deep emotive vocals, a tight rhythm section, this band just oozed class throughout. Frontman Tony Papa-Adams (who it turns out is an extremely apt barperson too) sinks himself deep into his music, with mannerisms that remind me of Joe Cocker at his soulful best.
With the venue filling quickly, they immediately connected with the crowd, who whooped and hollered before, during and after each song. I was so sucked in I lost track of how many songs they played, for me the sign of hearing something really enjoyable. Old Blood, you won me over in an instant, so much so I went home and stuck on their 2016 album ‘Live at Rada Studios’ – fantastic stuff!
I had only caught glimpses of Satisfaction Guaranteed in the past so was looking forward to really getting down to watch and hear them perform with a level head and clear senses and they most certainly didn’t disappoint! From the off you can see this is a band with purpose. The boys from Bunbury are certainly not here to make up the numbers, with their brand of 70’s rock n’ roll appealing to many and impressing all. With Jager-esque moves frontman Johnny Rogers stands on tip toes, weaving and swaying across the stage like a jack-in-the-box on overtightened springs!
Guitarist Ethan Robinson is a perfect partner in crime, cheekily egging Rogers on at every opportunity. Drummer Tommy Host oozes quality, with flashes of brilliance saved for the greats like Moon and Bonham, with bass player Ayden James helping steer this tight ship on its course to greatness. Watch out for these guys as they can expect something big in 2024! With a strong setlist that included songs like ‘Man Out of Time’, ‘Get By’ and latest single ‘Wasting Away’, get out and check out Satisfaction Guaranteed if they are on a bill near you. Energy, talent and that something special!
Tonight, was all about new music from rockers Leg Electric, celebrating the launch of new single & video for ‘Dance Like A Wolf.’ These women are seasoned at what they do and never fail to impress, with tonight showing fans both old and new just what they are all about. In Ama Quinsee they have a woman who can command an audience with ease, with quirky quips coming from drummer Kylie Soanes at every opportunity – the chemistry is still there and something that always impresses me about the band.
Bass playing Erin Gooden and guitarist Elana Haynes smirked and smiled throughout the twelve-song set featuring old faves ‘Strange Addiction’, ‘Dark Paradise’ and ‘Wanna Riot’ but it’s the new tracks that are really sitting forward now. ‘Black Moon’, released earlier this year and new single ‘Dance Like A Wolf’ have a fresh new bluesy rock vibe but its forthcoming single ‘Volcanic Eyes’ that really stood out as the highlight of the already impressive set. Legs also slipped in a cracking cover of ‘Proud Mary’ to add to the quality night of high class entertainment and music.
