LIVE REVIEW: Nothing But Thieves in Fremantle

METROPOLIS, FREMANTLE | 3RD MAY 2023

Metropolis Fremantle was the perfect venue to host Nothing But Thieves, especially after such a long time between gigs. We’ve settled for YouTube, socials and our preferred music platforms to hear them.  Die-hard fans squeezed into the cosy venue for a gig we were all so grateful to be a part of.  A talented bunch, this bands rise to the top has been well earnt with good old fashioned elbow grease and many of the fans attending had been there for the ride. There’s a mutual understanding between fan and artist, and appreciation all round for NBTs position on the world stage. We all felt lucky to be at this gig, in such an intimate and inclusive setting.

The band enter the stage opening with Bulletproof. It was the perfect punch in the face we all needed, to remind us of what was in store for the rest of the evening. Is Everybody Going Crazy and I Was Just a Kid followed as fans lapped it up singing like nobody was watching. A perfect opening to a much-anticipated gig.

Real Love Song, Soda and Trip Switch were received with much love and as each song was unveiled the energy in the room continued to spread. It’s a mighty effort for international artists to tour the west coast of Australia. If anybody was concerned extended travel and a rigorous touring schedule would affect the quality of music and Conor’s voice, they were perfectly rebuffed.  Nothing But Thieves were on point and firing on all cylinders. Perthites were steadfast to ensure the band knew just how much they are loved.

Life’s Coming in Slow, Forever and Ever More, Miracle Baby were great picks for a fine set. Particles was a standout for me and has been one of my favourite songs for a long time.  Hearing it live gave me all the feels. I had to constantly remind myself that Nothing But Thieves were actually in the room, and we were singing together. A phenomenal song.

City Haunts, Unperson and Phobia continued to entice the punters into a frenzy. Sorry took the energy to the next level. With rapturous applause, Conor took a moment to warn us that Metros roof was about to be blown away. And so it was, with a blasting rendition of Amsterdam. Conor caressed every sentimental moment, before exploding with amazing force. How could this show get any better? Everyone in the room found their voice and sang with vigour and appreciation.

Time for a band break and an upcoming encore with punters screaming, clapping and cheering for more.  All vantage points were taken around Metros and Nothing But Thieves lovers were not going anywhere. We all wanted more and knowing Welcome to the DCC was undoubtedly on the cards, we kept our focus. After a few minutes, the band re-enter the stage with DCC, a sure-fire hit.  Nothing But Thieves appreciation for their fans is evident with genuine smiles and gestures from the band while the energy bestowed on them from all sides of the stage tonight was tremendous.

Final song for the evening was the biggest sing-along of all, Impossible. No better way to finish a super set of music from the maestros themselves. A fantastic crescendo to a fabulous night of entertainment. Nothing But Thieves songs are everlasting, catchy and soulful. It’s obvious they have a deep connection with their music. Their camaraderie with each other is evident. They play as one and nobody demands more from their position than another. A genuine love for each other and their product. They understand what it means for the fans to go to a Nothing But Thieves show, throwing guitar picks and set lists out to the punters happily.

Conor noted how much the band enjoys touring Australia. The best news of the evening was finding out they will be back next year. I’m hoping they can put on some all ages shows to cover the kids who couldn’t make it to this one (18+ venue). Thank you Nothing But Thieves for taking the time to play for us and share the love. We felt every bit of it. Come back soon!
