The VANNS have been described as a true powerhouse of modern-day Aussie rock. Lucky for Freo Social, they hosted a sold-out gig to a diverse Western Australian crowd last weekend. If you didn’t go, you missed out! No doubt.
These boys know how to play, and mark my words, sounded even better than the recordings I’ve been listening to over and over. With an impressive catalogue of songs at their fingertips, The VANNS delighted their faithful fans with a superb evening of soulful, uplifting music.
Opening with Ever, Mother and Feels Good Now the band were on fire early, with some strong beats and a dazzling display of hardcore hair tossing. The fans eagerly singing along. Confirming these boys are a talented bunch, lead vocalist, Jimmy Vann didn’t miss a note and the band followed suite with a tight, raw but polished, well-rehearsed set.
Stand outs included Last of Your Kind, Fake Friends, Red Eye Flight (complete with Whoah’s and Woooo’s from the crowd) and Haunted. Easily one of my favourite covers ever on Triple J, Hey, Ma was enthusiastically embraced by the fans. A VANNafied version of a truly great song and better than the original in my opinion. Jimmy’s voice in fine form, harmonies to boot and some ripper guitar riffs to be had.
Best keep your eye out for future gigs people, because these guys are an absolute treat. Nice to see the merch table getting a workout too. Thanks to The VANNS and Freo Social for an awesome night out.\
