VIRGIN MARY DISCO Release Debut Single ‘MODERN MAN’

Melbourne’s own Virgin Mary Disco are hitting the ground running in 2023 with the release of their debut single ‘Modern Man’.

Taking cues from the likes of post-punk and new wave forerunners Joy Division, New Order and The Cure, and 70s punk heavyweights like The Clash, the band have carved out a sonic sweet spot that lies somewhere between the raw grittiness of underground punk, and the alluring sleaziness of mid-2000s indie. Of their musical intentions, guitarist Duncan Callaghan states “We all love the attractiveness of pop, indie and garage. We really wanted to create a gig where you can mosh to aggro bangers AND cry to sad boy bops, and then have it tie neatly together with some pop hooks”. A mission securely accomplished with the recording of ‘Modern Man’.

The song was produced, recorded, and mixed by Rohan Sforcina at Head Gap in Preston and was mixed by Crystal Mastering. “For this track we decided to take on a straightforward approach,” bassist Liam Spicer-Quinn explains. “We focused less on production and more on trying to capture the energy of our live sound”. The result? A short and sharp punch to the gut. Two minutes of unadulterated, lo-fi sweetness.

Virgin Mary Disco is Spencer Morris (Vocals), Liam Spicer-Quinn (Bass), Duncan Callaghan (Guitar) and Jackson Spessot (drums).
