Hit-and-Run Survivor MORGAN JOANEL Strikes Back with New Music Release

After a life-altering hit-and-run car crash in 2021 left her with 13 broken bones, a brain bleed and months in a wheelchair, Perth musician Morgan Joanel is staging a comeback. On November 22, she unveiled a powerful new version of her breakout single “Devil’s in the Detail”—a bold move that reignites her career on her own terms.

Forced to take a three year hiatus from performing whilst physically and emotionally recovering, it was only after the driver who caused the incident was convicted and jailed in 2024 that Morgan felt the freedom to dive back into recording new music. Defying every odd, she’s turned her recovery into a revolution, channelling her pain and strength into music that’s fiery, captivating, and utterly addictive.

This release is more than a song—it’s a battle cry.

The new version of “Devil’s in the Detail” emerged when she began jamming with her band, revealing a tone that is sonically more aligned to the artist’s vision. With darker moods reflected by The Rolling Stones style riffs; the song’s layered, textural moods of City and Colour weave around Morgan’s smoky vocals, evoking the richness of Florence and the Machine. Without the lyrics, you wouldn’t believe it’s the same song, and that is exactly how the artist feels about her life before and after such a hard hit from life.

“That accident took everything from me, but it also gave me a new perspective,” Morgan shares. “Re-recording this song feels like reclaiming my voice, in more ways than one.”

Using loop pedals, guitars, stomp boxes, and percussion, Morgan builds her songs live in real-time—no safety net, no pre-recorded tracks. Even with a full band, her immersive shows feel like a personal conversation with every audience member. That magnetic energy has taken her across national and international stages, sharing the spotlight with heavyweights including Adam Lambert (Queen), Jason Derulo, and Newton Faulkner. UK pop icon Anne-Marie discovered Morgan during an intimate Perth performance and invited her to open for the next leg of her international tour—proof that her genre-bending music transcends boundaries.

Her most recent EP Night Blooms landed national Triple J airplay and a semi-finalist spot in the International Songwriting Competition.

Now, with the release of “Devil’s in the Detail (New Version)”, Morgan is ready to turn a new page in her ever-expanding story. Originally released under a major label deal, the masters of “Devil’s in the Detail” remain out of her hands. In a move that nods to Taylor Swift’s reclamation of her masters, Morgan’s re-release is a bold declaration of artistic independence. It’s Morgan’s way of reframing her narrative, proving that even after life’s hardest hits, it’s possible to come back stronger, and more fearless than ever. As she prepares for a massive 2025, including national and international tours, “Devil’s in the Detail (New Version)” promises to set the tone for an artist whose star is burning brighter than ever.
