Perth Rocks Festival is happening Sunday, 15 September 2024. Stephanie Jewell got to speak to some of the bands ahead of the festival to get to know them and what they are all about. For her fourth interview she spoke with Adam Healy, vocalist and bass player of Nylon Stroke. Adam is joined on stage by good friends Gregor MacDonald (guitar) and Nate Lee (drums).

Steph: Tell me Nylon Stroke’s origin story?

Adam: Well to keep it short, I have always been in bands myself in the backline, either as the drummer or just as the bass player. It must have been around 2018 I had finished up in another band and had decided if I am going to do something I am going to make it MY thing this time and I wanted to be at the front of this one. I had already known Gregor, lead guitarist, for a couple of years, so immediately I just phoned him up and I was like ‘we are going to do something together. I don’t know what it is yet, but you and me are going to do it together’. And then a bunch of try outs for drummers. We had our first gig in 2018 for Jackson Koke. It was a half hour set, went really well. I remember Matt from Band of Missfits, saw us that night and said ‘you guys are really good, how long have you guys been going for, I have never heard you guys before.’ I said ‘that was our debut show’ and I remember his jaw dropped and he said ‘no, you guys have been at this for a while’ and I said ‘nope, that was our first gig as a band!’ That was when I knew that Gregor and I had something.

Steph: And what have you guys been working on lately, behind the scenes?

Adam: We have been working on our debut studio album. Last year we released our live album which we recorded at The Sewing Room, rest in peace. We decided to take some of those songs that we recorded live and do a nice mix of giving those songs a new life, and we are going to record some brand-new songs as well. We are recording that with Jacob from Legacy Alive. We have already started work on the first single. I am not going to say which one it is yet. But I will say we have already done bass, we have done all the drums, Gregor just did his rhythm guitars the other day. I think he is meeting up with Jacob to do his leads tomorrow and it is already sounding so good!

Steph: That sounds awesome! For people who haven’t heard Nylon Stroke before, what can they expect?

Adam: I would define our sound in three words: fast, loud, raw. When people ask genre, I just say hard rock because that is a very general term for what we are. I think we are a hard rock band, a lot of people I think put us down as a punk band as well. I think because we get our influences from Motorhead, Sex Pistols, Velvet Revolver, Greenday.. We have stuff taken from everywhere.

Steph: Speaking of rock, who are you most looking forward to seeing at Perth Rocks?

Adam: Ragdoll have always been one of my favourite bands, we have played with them a couple of times and they are always a joy to see. I am also looking forward to seeing Warbirds as well. I have been listening to some of their stuff and they sound awesome!

Steph: Great choices, Adam, thank you so much for your time!
