INTERVIEW: PERTH ROCKS FESTIVAL 2024 – Kym Redmond from BAND OF MISSFITTS

TICKETS ON SALE NOW AT OZTIX!

Perth Rocks Festival is happening Sunday, 15 September 2024. Stephanie Jewell got to speak to some of the bands ahead of the festival to get to know them and what they are all about. For her second interview, Steph sat down with Kym Redmond, vocalist from local Perth rock band, Band of Missfits to talk all things music. Band of Missfits are made up of Kym Redmond (vocals), Paul Smith (drums), Mat Kenworthy (guitar), Harrison Mills (guitar), Stuart Betts aka Stubacca (bass).

Steph: Kym, thanks for joining me on the couch. Please tell me what has been happening in the Missfits world?

Kym: We have got a new guitarist on board now, with Harrison Mills from Powerslave. He is a very, very cool, very talented guitarist and we are very lucky to have him. We have also got about three or four new songs that we have been trying to knuckle down. Two of them we are going to be playing for Perth Rocks, which is exciting to get to showcase those! And the other two still need a little more work before we release those ones out. But yeah, looking forward to actually recording some stuff soon, because we haven’t actually done that for a while.

Steph: For anyone who hasn’t seen or heard Band of Missfits, how would you describe your sound?

Kym: We are quite a loud band now, we have got two lead guitarists on board, I don’t really play too much guitar these days. So they can expect more of a heavy rock sound. They will just have to come along and have a listen and make sure to buy a ticket and check us out at Perth Rocks!

Steph: How did Band of Missfits come about, what is your origin story?

Kym: I was doing some solo stuff for years and wanted to have the force of a full band so I pretty much went out searching. I got Paul Smith on board and our original bass player, Sam. We started from there, we were a three-piece for a long time and have had a few different guitarists over the years and bass players. We have evolved slowly over time from being more of a soft rock band back in the early days to quite a harder rock band now. We have evolved quite a bit!

Steph: And how did you come to be involved with Perth Rocks?

Kym: I was in the first Perth Rocks – I can’t even remember when that is, I think it was four or five years ago? Sorry Jacob, I should know this! And I just threw my hat in the ring each time. It is a great festival

Steph: Nice! Is there any band in particular that you are really excited to see?

Kym: I have heard really great things about Darkyra so I am really excited to see those guys play. And Belgravia, I have only seen them once and I know they have just released a new song  and I am keen to check them out. Warbirds and Ragdoll, Ragdoll always put on a massive show, they are really awesome. Amberdown, Ojay, there are heaps!

Steph: Awesome! Thank you, Kym, for your time! Get on down to Perth Rocks and check out Band of Missfits!
