Perth Rocks Festival is happening Sunday, 15 September 2024. Stephanie Jewell got to speak to some of the bands ahead of the festival to get to know them and what they are all about. For her third interview, Steph sat down with Dutchie Holland and Nathan Catlin from JamArt. JamArt are a Perth local three-piece comprised of Ersh On (vocals and guitar), Nathan Catlin (drums) and Dutchie Holland (bass).
Steph: Nathan and Dutchie, thank you for sitting down with me tonight. How did JamArt get started, what is the origin story?
Nathan: It all started with the mastermind, Ersh On himself, I believe it would be now I think four years since JamArt have been around. I approached Ersh back in the day as he was looking for a drummer. At that time, I was listening to his stuff, and I was liking what I was hearing. So I thought I would give it a go and he tested me out and I got brought on board. We started from that way!
Dutchie: I was playing in a band called Cage to Hate and JamArt (just the two of them) decided to fill in, for a band that pulled out of the night. I also quite enjoyed the music so I stepped up and asked if they needed a bass player. It has been about four years since we have been doing it and we have been rocking out since then! We are on our third album now.
Steph: What has JamArt been working on lately?
Dutchie: We are currently writing and in that process. We have just come back from Europe actually. We did a few shows over there off the back of our second album. Ersh has gone into the studio and started writing and recording the third album and we are working on that at the moment.
Steph: And how did you guys become involved with Perth Rocks?
Nathan: I believe it was through Legacy Alive, Jacob. Ersh and Jacob connected and we got invited to play it. It will be our first time playing Perth Rocks so we are looking forward to it.
Steph: What can people expect if they haven’t heard JamArt before?
Dutchie: We would probably class ourselves as a progressive rock or progressive metal band. So you are going to hear everything from softer nice singing, to a lot faster thrash and screams. All in one song! So you are going to get a broad diverse range of music out of us on the day.
Nathan: One of our good friends, Calvin, is a member of Decapitated Chooks. He was originally part of Mosh In A Sanitorium, which I was originally part of. But he classified the sound as mystic soul rock metal.
Steph: What a classification! Speaking of, who are you most excited to see on the Perth Rocks line-up?
Dutchie: I am actually looking forward to seeing Belgravia, because I know a couple of the guys in there. I actually work with one of the guys, but I haven’t seen them live yet so I am really looking forward to seeing them live.
Nathan: I would say there are a few bands, Darkyra. I heard they are really good and really looking forward to seeing them. Amberdown is good to see, I have seen them quite a few times, they are awesome. Band of Missfits, Troll, I know a couple of them too. Legacy Alive are a good band, and the mighty Ragdoll, I hear they are on the bill too. It will be my first time seeing them. So definitely looking forward to that!
Steph: Thank you both so much for your time!
