Perth Rocks Festival is happening Sunday, 15 September 2024. Stephanie Jewell continued her Perth Rocks Series by speaking to some of the bands ahead of the festival to get to know them and what they are all about. For her next interview she spoke with Stewart Bowley, drummer and backing vocals for Spinning Jacks. Other band members include Amy Thompson (vocals), Chris Summerfield (guitar), and Liam Kinsella (bass).
Steph: Stewart please tell me the origin story of how Spinning Jacks came to be?
Stewart: I think we have been playing together for about roughly a year and a half now maybe. Chris, the guitarist, and I were in a previous band called Bohemian Crash for three years. Right before the last Perth Rocks when Jacob tried to book us, we broke up unfortunately, so we couldn’t play. I was involved with the Perth Rocks / Perth United Telethon stuff, so I got to play a song on the day. Chris and I were super keen to keep going so we changed the name and got a new singer and a new bass player and wrote a whole new bunch of songs and here we are!
Steph: What has been going on behind the scenes for Spinning Jacks, what are you currently working on?
Stewart: We are slowly working on recording an EP and we just did a Battle of the Bands that we came second in at the Old Court House. That was pretty good! And just trying to build promo and get more gigs, all the usual stuff really!
Steph: Speaking of, how would you describe Spinning Jacks’ sound, for those who haven’t heard you before?
Stewart: They can get all sorts – our Facebook page says that we are a mixture of Amy Winehouse and Led Zeppelin, if that’s anything to go by. Our singer has a bit of an Amy Winehouse vibe and we try to do a mixture of anything from blues to hard rock.
Steph: If you could play any other instrument, what would you play?
Stewart: If I couldn’t play drums or sing, because I sing a little bit, I would probably maybe like to play bass or guitar.
Steph: And who are you most looking forward to seeing at Perth Rocks?
Stewart: Myself, personally, Legacy Alive because I am a massive Legacy Alive fan, but also Ojay and Belgravia, because I haven’t seen them before, really keen to see those guys.
