Ahead of Electric Eye Heavy Fest happening on 5 October 2024, I got to sit down with some of the bands and chat about what has been happening, and what fans can expect to see at their sets. I spoke to Emily Highfield of Melbourne heavy metal band, Suldusk, ahead of Electric Eye Heavy Fest, on 5 October 2024.
Steph: Thank you for your time, Emily. Please tell me how Suldusk began?
Emily: Suldusk started as one person project, just me uploading stuff on Soundcloud and it has just grown organically into a full live band.
Steph: How did that evolution happen, from being a solo artist to now being a full metal band?
Emily: It happened just through playing live shows and evolving from an acoustic band, into a full metal ensemble.
Steph: Has the writing process for your music changed as that evolution happened?
Emily: I have co-writers now who will throw in their ideas, and together we work through what is the best version of a song.
Steph: And what have been some of the career highlights of Suldusk so far?
Emily: Supporting Aggaloch on their Australian tour recently. Also supporting Deafheaven, Zeal and Ardor, Wolves in The Throne Room, and many others.
Steph: What about some of the challenges that you have experienced so far, and how have you overcome them?
Emily: Planning an overseas tour and travelling to play music is expensive, and time consuming because we are based in the arse end of the world – Melbourne!
Steph: Are you looking forward to coming to Perth for the Electric Eye Heavy Fest?
Emily: Very much keen to see the scene in Perth. So honoured and happy to be a part of the line up.
Steph: What can fans expect from your set?
Emily: Something different and more eclectic. It is heavy in emotion and sound.
Steph: For those who haven’t heard of Suldusk before, how would you describe your sound?
Emily: It is shimmering guitars, acoustic, blast beats and atmospheres!
Steph: And lastly, what is coming for Suldusk in 2025?
Emily: A new album for 2025 and we are booked to play at a UK Festival in June!
