I want to start this by confessing that I don’t often review singles, preferring the atmosphere of live gigs and getting to feel the sound from the stage pumping through your chest as you experience the music. But when I was asked to review the new Legacy Alive track, titled Messenger, that is coming out Wednesday 4 September 2024, I couldn’t resist.
Legacy Alive are a local four-piece Perth band that have been around since 2006 and have a dynamic 80’s rock inspired sound. They are Jacob Kenny (vocals and guitar), Owen Fisher (bass and vocals), Curtis Sucksmith (guitar, synth and vocals), and Frank Lupino on drums and vocals.
Holy hell, Messenger blew me away, it is one of their best tracks yet! And I realise that is quite a big call, for a band that has been making music for the last 18 years! From the opening bars, all the way through to the end of the 4 minutes and 50 seconds-long song. The opening build-up, the chugging riffs, the bridge, everything about it. Just wow! It is full of crunchy guitar riffs and harmonics, wicked solos, soaring choral vocal melodies, all supported by hard hitting drums and bouncing bass notes throughout that give the backbone to the song and make it really punch! It is easy to understand where the influences fall into place on Messenger. Singer Jacob told me the main influences for this track are the self-titled albums from Killswitch Engage with Howard Jones, Eighteen Vision, Saosin and Anberlin’s album Cities.
I can’t recommend Messenger by Legacy Alive enough! Put it on, and turn it up, loud!
You can catch Legacy Alive playing at Perth Rocks on 15 September 2024 – Tickets available here.
