Perth’s BLACK KANYON drop new single ‘Looks Like’

“Looks Like,” marks the commencement of Black Kanyon‘s second EP, set for release in 2024. It deviates from their usual style by infusing an upbeat vibe while still embracing their love for heavy riffs, massive drums, and choruses that practically demand some headbanging. The infectious energy of the song is propelled by massive drums and a driving bassline. The guitars contribute intricate and ear-catching riffs, with their stellar guitarist, Tom Purdy, delivers his most substantial solo to date!

This track is a prime example of Black Kanyon’s collaborative song writing approach. Initially crafted by bassist, Ty Barwick, several years ago. Ty wrote the chords, form, bassline, and a more indie-inspired version of the drums and guitar parts for his former Indie band. Fortunately, that approach didn’t workout, it was then presented to his next band where the singer stated it wasn’t a good song and fast forward to the present, it found its way to Black Kanyon. Tom injected larger rock riffs and added that distinctive Black Kanyon flavour. David Brennan laid down the huge drum parts and fills featuring driving toms, recording them separately from the cymbals to amplify the song’s magnitude. Dan Connell, their larger-than-life vocalist, penned a catchy and memorable melody, reinforcing that their audience looks like it meant to be part of our community.

As for the song’s theme, Dan states that it is a vague observation regarding the rise of societal hypocrisy. Yet also always states that the vagueness of the band’s songs is for our audience to create and relate the songs to their own story.

Tom Purdy, handled the mixing, recording, and production. A skilled studio engineer, Tom envisions the sound that all Black Kanyon members pursue and share. Drums were self-recorded at Vision Studios in Perth, while guitars, bass, and vocals were captured in a home studio, showcasing Tom Purdy’s prowess as an emerging producer.

The release date for “Looks Like” is set for Friday, January 12, 2024.
