Randy Rhoads’ name is possibly one of the best and most influential players of a genre. Apart from Edward Van Halen there are few that have inspired as many bedroom guitar plays and turned them into household names. Where Randy Rhoads differs from so many other guitar players is that he isn’t just loved for his killer solos, but his technique and feel. His rhythm parts and riffs were inspiring as well as the technical stuff.
Andrew Slaidins got to sit down with Randy’s high school best friend Kelly Garni and talk about those early years. What Randy’s friendship and musical journey gave Kelly. In this interview they speak of everything leading up to the point where Rhoads joined Ozzy Osbournes band and became a household name. The band that Garni & Rhoads formed was none other than the break through hard rock/metal band Quiet Riot. Their time in Quiet Riot spanned from 1977 through to 1980, so they dive deep into history.
Slaids said, “Kelly Garni is headed to Australia this December for three shows that will celebrate the life and music of his dear friend Rhoads. It’s a great honest chat with the man that considered Randy to be his best friend until his untimely death. The tour itself will be a unique and once in a lifetime chance to get up close and personal with people that were closest to Rhoads as they present his legacy in such a unique way. Unfortunately, there was only limited time to talk all things Randy, but we could have talked for hours. Maybe there will be a second part where we can talk about their friendship until his passing. For now this is a great insight to the legend that is Randy Rhoads and what you can expect for these three very special shows this December.”
