SINGLE REVIEW: Rainbow Skull Party – Clownface

Released Friday 13th September

Rainbow Skull Party’s latest single, Clownface, is an eruption of raw sound and energy that marks the band’s most ambitious effort yet. Emerging from Australia’s vibrant indie scene, this psychedelic grunge trio—comprised of brothers Lawrie and Paul Cuthbert, and their collaborator David James—has been making waves since their debut in 2023.

With their unique blend of punk rock ferocity and psychedelic swirl, they’ve already carved out a niche that sets them apart from the pack. But Clownface feels like a whole new level for the band, a track that captures their chaotic brilliance in a way that’s both arresting and irresistibly infectious. Clownface opens with an all guns blazing intro that immediately grabs your attention. There’s a kind of reckless abandon to the way the track begins, a sense that the band is charging headfirst into the fray with no regard for safety.

The verse, punctuated by the stark lyric ‘I need my night fix, you’ll love my magic tricks,’ is both unsettling and compelling—a perfect encapsulation of the band’s knack for fusing lyrical ambiguity with sonic intensity. The chorus is where Clownface really takes off, merging heavy rock, indie, and psychedelic influences into a swirling maelstrom of sound. It’s a track that feels like it could implode at any moment, yet it never does, instead riding that edge with a kind of manic precision that’s both exhilarating and terrifying.

Rainbow Skull Party’s ability to walk that line—between chaos and control, spontaneity and structure—is what makes them such an exciting band to watch. There’s something almost theatrical about the way Clownface is constructed, as if the band is performing not just for an audience but for the gods of rock themselves. It’s a song that demands to be heard live, where the energy of the performance can spill out into the crowd and create something truly transcendent. With a debut EP set for late 2024 and a double album planned for 2025, Rainbow Skull Party is clearly gearing up for something big. If Clownface is any indication, they’re more than ready to break out of the underground and into the mainstream consciousness—and it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
