LIVE REVIEW: AVALANCHE With Special Guests Lucky Punks & Dangerous Curves

Cherry Bar, Melbourne - 6th October 2024

Avalanche

Tonight at the iconic Cherry Bar with it’s trademark Cherry Red lighting is Avalanche’s ‘Dad, I Joined a Rock n Roll Band’ 2024 tour. A celebration of their new single by the same name released on 26/09/24. Avalanche are joined by special guests Lucky Punks and Dangerous Curves.
One night down stairs at the Cherry Bar, three musicians decided to start their own band and the result was Lucky Punks.

Lucky Punks

They opened the night with their chaotic Aussie style of punk rock. This 3-piece band comprises Alexander Murphy on lead guitar and vocals, Adam Sarros on
bass and vocals and Dane McGreery on drums. They have a big drum sound with hard hitting beats and heavy guitar and bass playing. Their songs have Aussie sounding punk lyrics with a touch of surfie sounding guitars. Lucky Punk have a sound that reminds me of The Chats, but
with their own original style. Their raw vocals and passionate playing make their music reverberate inside your body.

Lucky Punks

They have recently released some music on Spotify and live do great covers of The Ramones “Hey, Ho, Let’s go” and Sneaky Sounds Systems “UFO” Lucky Punks played a 30-minute set of 8 songs and had the crowd participating on their final song of the set “Dangerous Day”. They closed their energetic set to enthusiastic applause.

Dangerous Curves

Next special guest were Dangerous Curves fronted by lead singer Kym Britten with Luke Chapman on drums, Will Saw on bass and back up vocals and Alex Richmond on lead guitar and back up vocals. Dangerous Curves are a hard rock, party band whose music is reminiscent of the LA hair bands of the late 80’s. Their influences of Van Halen, Poison, Motley Crue, Kiss and Bon Jovi are evident in the music, but are given a modern Aussie twist.

Dangerous Curves

Kym the lead singer gives off that classic front man style of David Lee Roth and is vocally very talented. He is surrounded by equally talented musicians with spot on vocal harmonies. They play ballsy guitar riffs and have a big drum sound. It sounds like they have been playing together for a very long time, their music is tight and very professional. Dangerous Curves played a 45-minute set of 10 songs and even covered “Everybody’s a winner baby” by Hot Chocolate.

Dangerous Curves

Dangerous Curves music is available on Spotify and to purchase on CD or Vinyl. Their latest album “Summertime High” came home with us and has already been played this morning. If you love this genre of music you should definitely check out Dangerous Curves. They are well worth the entry price and a good time is guaranteed with both the covers and original music.

Avalanche

“Dad, I Joined a Rock n Roll Band” the ironic title of Avalanche’s new single and tour as the lead singer Steven Campbell has named the band after his dad’s 1970’s band Avalanche. Avalanche are a 4-piece band fronted by Steven Campbell on vocals, his wife Veronica Campbell on lead guitar, Ryan Roma aka “ADHD” on drums and Arthur Divis on rhythm guitar. Avalanche are a Sydney based hard and heavy pub rock band. You can hear the Aussie rock influences of AC/DC, The Angels, Airbourne and Rose Tattoo.

Avalanche

They play dirty pub rock with caveman growly, guttural, raw vocals full of grunt. Powerful lead guitarist Veronica can not be contained by a stage. She is frequently prowling the crowd while shredding her guitar. Drummer Ryan has to be the bravest man in Melbourne, wearing a Panthers guernsey on the eve of the NRL final against Melbourne Storm, but the cheeky bugger certainly knows how to hit the skins. Their music is all pulled together by Arthur on rhythm guitar and the front three’s coordinated head banging dancing.

Avalanche

Avalanche were on stage for just over an hour, playing a 12 song set, including originals and even a reimagined Dragon cover of “April Sun in Cuba”. The crowd chanted for one more song and were granted their wish with a one song encore of AC/DC’s “Let There Be Rock” and Cherry Bar certainly did rock tonight. You can hear Avalanche’s music on Spotify and YouTube and a special note all the band members’ dads make a guest appearance in the video of “Dad, I Joined a Rock n Roll Band.”
