LIVE REVIEW: P!nk with special guests The Script Xcel

Energy Center St. Paul, Mn 10/17/2024

Opening band The Script reminds me of those horribly boring bands from the 1980s like U2 and others that just stand there. I am not saying their songs are bad or that they are not good musicians. Not what I would expect from P!nk who is very theatrical and energetic. She should consider an opening act like Dirty Honey or Star Crawler. These guys should open for Train, Matchbox 20,  or Collective Soul. They could name it the snoozefest tour. The Script is like a glass of warm milk, room temperature and no flavor. The one upside is it helps you fall asleep.
I photograph over 200 bands a year and I was bored. It was safe, sterile and weak.  As I get older I guess I expect more. Is that wrong of me as a paying customer? I am sorry if you are a fan of this band. I go out of my way to avoid bands like this. It’s everything that’s wrong with pop music.
Now on to the headliner P!nk. Wow, just wow! She is the gold standard of what all pop artists and touring bands should learn from and aspire to be. It is easily in my top 5 shows of 2024.
Everywhere you look there is something going on. The light show was stunning along with the dancers and of course the band. What an amazingly talented group of musicians. The music was played to perfection,  and every song has a theme. I got the feeling they were all family.
I noticed a real difference with the production vs. the Madonna tour. Madonna always comes across with a political agenda. Whereas Pink is just pure fun! And I really appreciate that about her. The idea of live music is to be able to lose yourself in the moment and forget all of the trouble and worries you have even if for only a few hours. Turn the world off and let yourself just enjoy the experience.
She is exactly where she should be. In front of a huge crowd singing her heart out. I can’t get over how talented she is. I am telling you she is the real deal. Her enthusiasm is inspiring and intoxicating. She even brought her daughter Willow out to sing a song with her.
The only thing I didn’t care for is the covers she played. I would rather hear her sing her songs. But I would say that about every artist or band I see. She has so many great songs she doesn’t need the covers. I get why she does it. But I wish she would stick to her music.
This was probably the 5th time I have seen her and she never disappoints. If you get the chance, don’t miss out. Pink is truly one of the great ones. I am confident she will be around for a long time to come.
