Bleeding Gums Murphy’s brief appearance on The Simpsons is probably one of the show’s most emotional and iconic. When Dan Cribb decided to record the season six tune that fuelled that episode for his Worst Tribute Ever project, the Perth rocker knew he had to enlist some serious talent.
That’s where sleepmakeswaves’ Otto Wicks-Green comes into the equation, because not only can he delivering soaring vocals, he’s one of the country’s best guitarists; a useful skill when translating the slew of saxophone solos from the Carol King classic into guitar melodies.
“We’d been working on a different song for a few months and couldn’t get it to click,” Cribb explains.
“We caught up during BIGSOUND and after several hours of obnoxiously screaming Simpsons lyrics in the Brightside beer garden in the early hours of the morning, we landed on Jazzman.”
Jazzman is accompanied by a cover of the Latin-infused Señor Burns, which features his bandmate in The Isolated, Scott Connor.
It’s Connor’s second appearance on the project after lending his vocals to Oh, Streetcar! early on.
Jazzman and Señor Burns are now streaming via Bandcamp alongside Monorail (featuring Clowns’ Hanny J), Scorpio (featuring Luca Brasi’s Tye Richardson), Flaming Moe’s (featuring Alex Lahey) and more.
Catch Dan Cribb & Friends playing songs from Worst Tribute Ever at City Limits Festival on March 3.
