Perth groove metal act are an up and coming rising band who have recently been gaining some traction with the release of their new EP “Survival Or Ruin” which came out September 14th through Rockpit Records. In celebration of the new songs in which Hysteria Magazine said “…has everything you could want from truly imaginative melodic groove metal–vicious vocals, machine gun drum lines, killer guitar and bass runs that tickle the ears like ants on speed”, the band are set to perform live at two launch shows in their home state of WA over the next two weeks. We grabbed a few words from the band ahead of the shows to find out a little more on what to expect.
Tell us about the process of writing and recording the new songs on “Survival Or Ruin”.
This question is always difficult to answer because basically we got in a room, wrote the songs, recorded the drums, then guitar, then bass and finally vocals. Then it was wrapped up in a nice little package and delivered to our friends at Liquid Studios to work their magic.
What were some of the things you wanted to achieve with the release?
Playing metal is a passion of all of ours and to be able to show people our music brings us great satisfaction. This is a release that we worked really hard on and I think that our progression as musicians is really evident.
Do you enjoy the process of creating? Are you someone who continually writes or does the best come out under a little gentle pressure?
The writing in Bayview is a constant. With ideas and concepts being thrown around all the time it helps as we prefer not to be under pressure as that can sometimes limit our creativity.
What does it feel like as an artist waiting for the songs you’ve lived with for some time to get released to the fans? Is there a sense of excitement or a little panic in there too?
It is incredibly rewarding to finally get this release amongst the masses. There is nothing but overwhelming excitement for the things to come.
What were the lyrical themes and inspirations of the songs?
Our vocalist John was really inspired by Sun Tzu’s ‘The Art of War.’ I think that was a real influence in the lyrics across the whole EP.
Any favorite moments or songs on the new EP?
One of my personal favourites is the bridge in ‘Watch Those Catch Light.’ I think the musical fusion between the guitars and drums build together really well into the drop where the vocals take over.
The band has recently had a lineup change with 2 new members so how has the band been dealing with the change in the lineup?
Kristian and Shane are the perfect fit into Bayview, what they bring to the band will be invaluable and we are so glad to have them onboard.
What can people expect on your upcoming launch shows?
Hopefully a fun night out with good music and a couple of beers with people bangin’ their heads. We like to maintain a high energy set that keeps people moving from start to finish. With the new release, we are focused on playing the new stuff which will be a lot of fun.
How has the experience of playing live been like for the band so far? Any favorite places to play live?
I think it is pretty safe to say that this is our favourite part of being in the band. Having the chance to share our music in a live setting is amazing. Probably Badlands and Amps is the favorite venue in Perth.
What has been a personal career highlight for the band so far?
I think winning the Xpress Magazine battle of the bands was pretty cool and I really liked the one where Deadspace spilled wine all over Luke’s kit [laughs].
How did the band form and get started?
It all started with a terribly drawn advert at Kosmic Sound.
From what you’ve learned so far what is the most valuable advice you’ve been given so far as a musician?
You can never play too many shows (Dave Grohl).
Who are some of your influences and what inspired you to be in a band and play music?
Some of our favourite bands are “ Born of Osiris, Lamb of God, Whitechapel, Slipknot, Children of Bodom. The inspiration is the passion to play our instruments for ourselves and others.
If you could be a fly on the wall for the recording of any album in history, what album would it be?
Watching Jason Richarson and Luke Holland record ‘I’ would be incredible.
What is the meaning of life?
Ask Monty Python.
