US hard rock act Trapt returned to Perth for a second run this past Monday night, less than 2 years since their debut tour on Australian soil. For those that caught them last time, the band decided to mix up the set and deliver something special for the first show of the Australian tour.

Opening up for the night were two local acts in Carrington and Shangrila, both putting on solid performances that fit with the overall rock theme of the night. It’s always a difficult job to gain the interest of punters who are there for one reason only and this being a Monday night on top of that, one has to give credit for the bands in braving it early on.

Trapt of course were the main drawcard for the night and were here to celebrate the best of the bands career to date. Bringing with them on the night was their classic self titled album which now sits at almost 20 years ago and the band pulled no stops in delivering the best that album has to offer.

“Echo” of course was one of their highlights as well as “These Walls” which received a raucious feedback but the band didn’t just focus on the self titled material but on a wide variety of hit songs including “Love Hate Relationship”, “Ready When You Are” and the personal “Waiting”.

Frontman Chris Brown had a certain commandeering stage presence tonight, leading the charge and really getting into the excitement of the show. With a ton of interpersonal play with the crowd including one moment of video chatting live on stage with a phone, it all added to the atmosphere of having a good time which also included a round of shots and a ton of beer drinking. Not bad for the start of the week.

The uplifting nature of the anthemic “Black Rose” saw the crowd emphatically lap it up before rounding it out with the massive “Headstrong”, now a staple in the bands repetoire. The crowd wanted more of course and so Chris took a solo spot centre stage for the song “Stories” with his acoustic guitar, ending things on a mellower but touching note.

For the modern rock fan Trapt deliver on all fronts and the response from the crowd may mean another return for the band which, on a side note, hinted at a possible acoustic run in the future.
