Greek rockers 1000Mods have been trekking all across Australia as part of their first ever tour in the country and it all came to an end in WA this weekend with a double run of shows, the first at the relatively new Lucy’s Loveshack which is fast becoming the place to be for live music as well as beer and pizza.
The aptly named Magic Chicken Fudgetoe opened up the night in the intimate, dark settings of Lucy’s Loveshack which oozes rock n roll vibes all around reminiscent of Sydney’s Frankies Pizza. The band kicked things off with their brand of stoner fuzz rock and already you could tell this was going to be a good night. The name may be a slight distraction for a second but not enough to take anything away from the music as things start to sizzle early on
All girl band Legs Electric are fast becoming an institution in the Perth rock scene with their more classic rock overtones. Kicking off a recent single and Quentin Tarantino style video for “Tuesday Girl“, the 4 piece scorched the low ceilings and pulled in punters and the curious quickly as they aimed to score another batch of new fans as they tend to do wherever they play. Bluesy overtones mixed with some serious swagger and a hook that’s undeniable, Legs Electric certainly impressed everyone in the room tonight as they always do.
Fuzz Toads ended up being a huge highlight for the night with their psychedelic stoner rock sound. Punching in heavy riffs and a groove that was awashed with some muscle, the band tore through a quick set of fuzzy psych rock that got the crowd riled up even further. Brilliantly played, on point and further cementing how undervalued the underground scene really is. If this didn’t do a little something to your musical psych then there’s probably not much hope for you! Great band and a perfect way to lead into the main act.
1000Mods is admittedly a band that fell way under my radar over the years but judging by the crowd tonight, clearly they tapped into other people’s reach. Hailing from Greece, the band are hugely inspired by Black Sabbath as clearly evident in their doom like riffs but there’s a lot of other influences and styles coming through that are more akin to the likes of Red Fang, Kyuss and even a bit of Earthless with their sweeping landscapes of musical instrumentation.
Packed in at the floor area at the venue, the crowd were into it immediately as the band proceeded to lay down some heavy stoner rock riffs that were full of that sweet fuzzy tones. It was the perfect setting for 1000Mods really, the psychedelic bluesy melodies pouring through like an acid trip in itself, lights flashing by with the alternative rock posters almost swaying in the limelight of it all. It was almost as if the music was dictating the environment itself.
A few words were spoken by Dani G. who I spoke to recently ahead of the tour, about their appreciation felt on tour so far. For a band to tour here for the first time must be a great feeling and it was seen through the performance itself as they left their mark on Aussie crowds in the hopes to return in the future. No doubt with the success of the shows themselves, it’s almost inevitable we will see them again.
