There’s so much quality Melodic Rock out there at the moment, and no small chunk of it from Frontiers that you could argue the form is going through an artistic high even if that is not backed up by the chart dividends of the early 80’s.
The down side is that with so much good stuff out there its getting harder to get noticed, there’s an awful lot of bands making good Melodic Rock albums but surprisingly few exceptional releases out there. UNRULY CHILD plays their Melodic Rock will a slick AOR sheen that will delight some and seem a little passé to others, but if AOR is where it is for you the this could be one of your essential releases of the year.
Here you get 11 quality tracks written by Bruce Gowdy (guitarist – Stone Fury, World Trade), and Guy Allison (keyboardist – Lodgic, World Trade, Doobie Brothers) and adorned further with the drumming of Jay Schellen (Hurricane, World Trade, Asia), and bassist – Larry Antonino (Pablo Cruise). What really stands out though are the vocals of Marcie Free, which simply sizzle and soar on material like this.
From the AOR swagger of opener ‘The Only One’ and the cool groove of ‘Four Eleven’ this is an album of precision, charm, cool and melody. If you love AOR with clean notes, passionate vocals and sweeping melodies its an album you need to hear. Check out tracks like the beautiful, sweeping ‘See if She Floats’; the heavenly harmonies of ‘Point of View’ or the sweeping closer ‘Someday Somehow’ and tell me this isn’t as good as AOR gets in 2017.
The future looks bright for Unruly Child!
