Sol features the previously released singles Approach of The Epoch and Visions of Helios and applies the heaviest and most melodic elements of progressive metal to create an instrumental journey for this retro sci-fi inspired concept album. As composer and guitarist Luke Maxwell Johnson puts it “I wanted to push myself to explore soundscapes outside of the more traditional and melodic death metal I’ve done in bands to date”. To that end he’s embraced the more electronic elements, incorporating not only retro keys and mellotrons but an array of synths, drum machines, sound fx and strings to create a detailed and at times cinematic sonic landscape in which these songs can live.
As to the story of Sol, Luke details the Lovecraftian concept that drives the album: “People are losing time during the day and waking to nightmares, seeing visions of the Sun and a dark portal within. As you progress through the album our main character comes to realise they are being controlled by forces unseen, beings from another world, and so must journey there and confront them”.
