It had been seven years since the Sisters of Mercy headlined an Australian tour so it was a long time coming for this highly anticipated show with tickets being announced halfway through last year, the night was finally here. First show of the tour, an almost sold out show and a line that was out the door.
Chosen for support was Perth post punk goth band Nerve Quakes, their doomy yet energetic droning goth style and gorgeous, powerful vocals make them the perfect choice for the night. The theatre started to fill out with patrons bopping along.
The Sisters of Mercy, with their goth/rock/ synth style, have been a staple in the goth subculture since the early eighties and have continued to influence the genre for years. Because of this, the night’s crowd was an eclectic sea of diversity. From the newer young fans to the older long-time fans and everyone in between, for most, nostalgic seemed to be the common mood.
Opening their set with ‘More’, I could tell right then we were in for an energetic onslaught of material. Eldritch and his band power through an amazing setlist of 15 songs which include Dominion/Mother Russia, Alice and Marian, barely stopping between each, it is definitely rocking and there is a lot of crowd participation.
The band leave the stage in a cloud of blue smoke leaving us to beg for an encore which they oblige coming back out to then perform another four songs one of them being This Corrosion which sends the crowd nuts.
This gig leaves you with amazing feeling!
