ALBUM REVIEW: Black Income – unSOUND

Tube IT Records - August 23rd 2019

It’s three years since Alt-Rockers Black Income’s debut ‘Noise Pollution’ a record which saw them tour Europe, playing festivals and opening for bands such as varied as Exumer, Bullet and Tigers of Pan Tang. Now they’re back with a second album that deals with the complexities of modern life.

The inspiration for unSOUND, says vocalist Henrik “is everything around us. The band wanted to take on the unsafe and unsure structure of the world today, and it’s safe to say everybody has something to deal with every day; but with a world on fire and close to collapsing, things really get put into perspective, and a lot of decisions have to be made by the people of power”.

Sonically Black Income like many bands who wear the ‘Alternative’ tag these days find themselves in the midst of a slew of bands treading that dark and downcast Alice in Chains/Grunge vibe and whilst a few years back it was just staring to rear it’s head again this year I’ve noticed a great resurgence of new bands challenging AIC and their ilk. Not of course (as they say) there’s anything wrong with that, but with so many sonic soundalikes it’s hard to set yourself aside from the pack and whilst Black Income (or ‘Blck Incm’ as you’d think from the cover) do it well I’m not sure the AIC-like ‘Feels Like a Storm’ or the Soundgarden-like ‘The Sun’ turn over any new ground though, there is no denying they are good songs.

Standouts here are the aforementioned along with the uncomfortable and melancholic ‘Wait for Wonders’. This is 90’s Grunge 25 plus years on, your take on this may well depend on your age but I can honestly say this is definitely one of the most promising reboots of the genre.
