Following the recent announcement of their signing to legendary US label Merge Records, Melbourne’s fierce rock’n’roll trio Cable Ties have today released ‘Sandcastles’, the first single off their new forthcoming album Far Enough, slated for release in March 2020 via Poison City / Merge Records.
Once again enlisting Paul Maybury (Rocket Science) on recording duties, Far Enough features all the critical elements of Cable Ties’ sound – colossal walls of ‘70s hard rock and pithy proto-punk are coupled with a pulsing rhythm section, anxious guitar, defiant songwriting, earth-trembling vocals and unwavering intensity.
Available now for pre-order via www.poisoncityestore.com, Far Enough sees the band take three-minute punk burners and stretch them past breaking point to deliver smouldering feminist anthems.
According to Cable Ties’ guitarist and vocalist Jenny McKechnie, the new single ‘Sandcastles’ is an outward criticism toward those community activists who feel that effective discourse can be created by shouting down and casting out those who don’t abide by the social norms or language of an exclusive community.
“Sandcastles is aimed at a figurative individual who doesn’t have any interest in making positive changes in society or participating in open and productive discussions about political and social issues,” Jenny says.
“Rather, they set themselves up as the gatekeepers of progressive groups by aggressively policing language and immediately casting out anyone who doesn’t abide by the codes of behaviour they have created. This turns purportedly intersectional, progressive groups into exclusive clubs only accessible to people with homogeneous opinions, social and economic backgrounds and ways of speaking.”
o supplement the new single, Cable Ties have also released an arresting video produced by renowned Melbourne-based director Danny Cohen. A stripped-back clip shot directly onto black and white 16mm, the video removes any focus toward the band’s instruments, focusing instead on the song’s message by directing the audience’s attention to Jenny, Shauna and Nick’s faces.
Coinciding with their showcases at SXSW in March, Cable Ties have also locked in a fresh batch of international tour dates, introducing audiences in the US, UK and EU to tunes off their new album. Before they embark though, the band will be playing a string of local shows, including a stint at Wollongong’s Farmer and Owl Festival, Melbourne’s Fitz Ritz, and a sneaky show at Sydney’s Vic on the Park.
