ALBUM REVIEW: Howling Mountain – Fingertips EP

Here’s one to look out for if you’re on the East Coast of Australia…

There’s a Grungy sway and staccato jangle of guitars of the title track to this EP and plenty of pent up emotion to drag you in. In a way this reminds me of Soul Asylum via Nirvana and The Cranberries, but nice and raw like I like it. Similarly the other three tracks on this EP are just as, if not more enticing. ‘Fix Me’ has plenty of balls coming out all fuzz and buzz and allowing the vocal to wash over the instruments before they sweep it up into the chorus. Close you eyes and the effect is doubled.

‘Get What I Want’ though is probably my favourite, a stomp, a wail of guitars, you can sense things becoming ready to blow even before the main riff kicks in darker and heavier than what’s come before – then the vocal kicks in and it’s just SOOO right – now we’re rocking! This is alt rock that still has something to say rather than just sitting back and espousing how cool it is!

‘Self Medicate’ is another deliberately rough diamond, all dynamics and brooding and totally music to lose your self in. I love this, just wish I could find the press release and had any idea of the running order! All I can suggest is that if you’re cool enough to live in Melbourne these guys are cooler than you! Check them out!
